The uniform vision of the New Zealand Companion Animal Council is:

"To be a forum for the facilitation of a harmonious relationship between companion animals, people and the environment."

This vision is pursued through various strategic goals agreed upon by the Council which include:

STRATEGIC PLAN – 2010-2014

The New Zealand Companion Animal Council has, by meeting dated 25th November 2009, approved the following Strategic Plan for the five-year period commencing 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2014.

ANNUAL NEW ZEALAND CONFERENCE

Stage an annual New Zealand Companion Animal Conference in selected main centres to include speakers, both International and Local, who are inspirational and informative in all matters relating to animal welfare and control.

Include within the annual conference format the presentation of Assisi awards to recognise outstanding individual contributions to animals and their welfare.

SURVEYS AND RESEARCH

Encourage and initiate the gathering of statistical information that will assist animal-related organisations, and undertake research to provide a greater understanding of companion animal needs, their place in the community, and their behavioural patterns.

Share and publish such information that will improve the understanding and welfare of companion animals.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Encourage and undertake the production and distribution of resource materials on animal care and welfare to assist in the development of responsible pet ownership within the community, including school material.

Encourage and promote a public understanding of the concept of the human / animal bond by promoting the positive benefits of pet ownership, the therapeutic worth of animals and the value of animals working and living within general and special communities.

LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES

Prepare position papers on various animal related issues to collectively lobby to improve existing legislation to effect positive benefits both to animals and the community.

Play an active and supportive role in the development of authoritative guidelines that will create an improved environment for, and an understanding of, the needs of all companion animals including the writing of Codes of Welfare for their benefit.

Acknowledge and endeavour to involve Territorial Authorities and Government agencies in matters involving animals with a view to improving the environment both for animals and the community.

IDENTIFICATION AND WELFARE SUPPORT

Play a leading role in the development and promotion of the microchip as an identification process and operate an efficient and effective system to record and retrieve animals as a commercially viable enterprise.

Utilise funds obtained from commercial activities to be held in Trust for distribution on application to animal welfare individuals or organisations for worthy projects.

MEMBERSHIP

Encourage individual and organisation membership of those involved or interested in the development of the principles of the NZ Companion Animal Council and provide meaningful benefits to those members.

Operate International affiliations with like-minded organisations sharing views, information and researched statistical information.

FUNDING

Seek funding to assist in the advancement of the NZ Companion Animal Council and the realisation of these strategic goals.
