It is widely accepted that the single most effective way of getting lost pets home is microchipping and registration.
Since its formation in 1996 the New Zealand Companion Animal Council has been at the forefront of promoting microchipping and registration. This support for microchipping led to the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) being created in 2007. This dedicated repatriation database quickly became the leading New Zealand based microchipped pet repatriation system.
The NZCAR is now used by over 97% of vets, 85% of territorial authorities, SPCA branches and many other rescue organisations and implanters. In fact there are now over 700 locations in New Zealand where an animal can be scanned and checked on the NZCAR.
Lets Get Scanning!!!
The success of microchipping has been the huge growth in the technology that allows microchips to be read. Scanners are now available at vet clinics, councils, pets shops, rescue organisations and many other locations throughout New Zealand.
The quicker a chip can be scanned the quicker the missing pet can be returned home.
To boost both the usefulness and availability of scanners the NZCAR has partnered with the Pet Accessory Workshop in Europe to roll out a new technology called "Scanner Angel", along with the "Halo Scanner". The advantage of this new technology is that the scanner has the ability to download the list of microchip numbers currently reported as missing on the NZCAR and display this data directly on the Halo Scanner when an animal is scanned.
Updated every time the scanner is plugged in to recharge, this allows people to quickly identify both missing and stolen pets.
Unlike collar based technology the microchip does not go flat, does not fall off, and is not easily removed. While tracking a pet maybe a nice tool, it does not offer the security of microchipping and registration.
THE GREAT SCANNER GIVEAWAY!!!
May 2015 will see the NZCAR start to giveaway over 650 new Halo Scanners throughout New Zealand. Scanners will be delivered from May 12 2015, and the Scanner Angel system will be operating from 29 May 2015.
The goal of this campaign is to increase the number of places members of the public can check their pets are chipped and registered as well as making it even easier for NZCAR users to ensure lost pets get home.
The BIG advantage for these new scanners is every time they are plugged into a computer with internet access* they update the list of missing microchipped pets currently listed on the NZCAR and Pets on the net. The scanners update the list of missing pet microchip numbers each time they are plugged in to recharge on a Windows PC* with internet access.
The NZCAR hope this new smart scanner will be adopted throughout New Zealand.
The Halo Scanner is also available to private buyers for just $125 + GST per scanner. This make it not only one of the most efficient scanners in New Zealand, but also one of the most affordable too.
